Students who are candidates for the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine complete a four-year curriculum consisting of required courses, clerkships, and electives.
During years one and two, students complete required courses in core basic science disciplines: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Cell and Tissue Biology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology. Students also take Introduction to Clinical Medicine, a two-year course covering basic clinical skills and other topics relevant to clinical practice.
Beginning with the entering class of 2006, students complete required modules that integrate core basic science disciplines including anatomy, biochemistry, histology, microbiology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology as well as basic clinical skills, preventive medicine, ethics, behavioral sciences, and other topics relevant to clinical practice.
In year three, students take required clerkships in core clinical disciplines: Ambulatory Medicine/Geriatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neuropsychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Surgery.
During year four, students complete additional required clerkships (Rural Preceptorship, Critical Care, Health of the Public, Subinternship) and electives.
All required courses and clerkships must be completed at the KU School of Medicine. Exceptions may be granted with the approval of the appropriate course or clerkship director, the relevant department chair, or the Academic Committee.
