Eligibility for the Resident Rate
Kansas Statutes Annoted, 1974 Supp. 76-729, as amended by Chapter 469 of the 1975 Session Laws of Kansas, provides as follows: K.S.A. 76-729. Residence of students for fee purposes; basic rule; certain exceptions authorized. Persons enrolling at the state educational institutions under the control and supervision of the state board of regents who, if such persons are adults, have been domiciliary residents of the state of Kansas or, if such persons are minors, whose parents have been domiciliary residents of the state of Kansas for at least 12 months prior to enrollment for any term or session at a state educational institution are residents for fee purposes. A person who has been a resident of the state of Kansas for fee purposes and who leaves the state of Kansas to become a resident of another state or country shall retain status as a resident of the state of Kansas for fee purposes if the person returns to domiciliary residency in the state of Kansas within 12 months of departure. All other persons are nonresidents of the state of Kansas for fee purposes.

Library Fee. Students are assessed $100 per year for library services.
Student Health Information
All full and part-time students enrolled at KUMC are automatically assessed a student health fee. This fee entitles all KUMC students to an unlimited number of free clinical office visits at the KUMC Student Health Center. There are additional charges for such services as immunizations, allergy injections, routine physical examinations, lab work, prescription medications, etc.
Before enrollment, all KUMC students must complete a physical examination, immunization record, and health history form. It is the responsibility of the student to submit this required information to the KUMC Student Health Center. At the time of admission, the Student Health Center is available to conduct physical examinations and administer required immunizations. Students are responsible for the cost of the examinations and vaccines.
Student Health Insurance
The University of Kansas Medical Center requires all medical students to be covered by medical insurance. All new students must show proof of health insurance at the time of enrollment. Students may enroll in a plan of choice or the plan provided by the state of Kansas. If at any time during a medical student’s tenure at KU Medical Center his or her health insurance lapses, he or she may be subject to dismissal from school.
Long-term Disability Insurance (Phoenix Mutual)
All medical students, residents, and fellows are covered automatically for $1,000 of monthly disability insurance benefit from enrollment until graduation, upon submission of premium costs. Payment will begin 180 days following a disability (based on definitions of disability within the group insurance contract) and will be payable to the age of 65. The plan can be converted to an individual contract when one terminates association with the University of Kansas Medical Center. No refunds are available.
All subscribers may obtain additional monthly benefit amounts through a supplemental individual disability insurance program. Monthly benefit amounts can range up to $4,000 per month (depending on occupation status), and premiums will incorporate up to a 15 percent discount for the life of the contract. This plan is completely portable with modification when one terminates association with the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Refund of Tuition and Fees
A medical student who withdraws or is dismissed is eligible for a refund of tuition and fees paid, or credit for tuition and fees due, according to the schedule outlined on the Registrar’s Web site.
Note: According to the refund/repayment policy published by Student Financial Aid, any refund may be returned to student aid programs.
Tuition and Fees Paid by Sponsors
Tuition and fees for students sponsored by recognized foundations, scholarship organizations, or the managers of loan funds are billed to the sponsor. The sponsor’s written acceptance of such a responsibility must be presented to the Student Financial Accounting Office of KU Medical Center. A copy should be presented to the cashiers at enrollment.

Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan Program
Students may borrow up to $8,500 annually; the loan is awarded based on financial need. The interest rate for the Stafford Loan is a fixed 6.8 percent, and the interest is subsidized while a student is enrolled. Loans are made through participating lending institutions. Stafford Loans have a six-month grace period after graduation or when a student ceases enrollment.
Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program
Students may borrow up to $30,000 annually. This loan is not based on financial need. The interest rate for the Stafford Loan is a fixed 6.8 percent, and interest accrues while a student is enrolled. Loans are made through participating lending institutions. Stafford Loans have a six-month grace period after graduation or when a student ceases enrollment.
Federal Perkins Loan Program
Students may be awarded up to $6,000 annually; the loan is based on financial need. The interest rate for the Perkins Loan is a fixed 5 percent, and the loan is subsidized while a student is in school. Perkins Loans have a nine-month grace period after graduation or when a student ceases enrollment.
Kansas Medical Student Loan Program
The Kansas Medical Student Loan Program was created by the Kansas state legislature to support KUMC students and encourage graduates to practice in underserved areas in Kansas. The Kansas Medical Student Loan is awarded annually, in return for agreements to practice medicine in Kansas after residency. The Kansas Medical Student Loan provides payment of tuition and living expenses disbursed with a monthly stipend.
KU Tuition Grant
The KU Tuition grant is given to financially needy students. Students who apply for financial aid at KUMC are automatically considered for this grant. Award amounts vary depending on the funding level each year.
Endowment Scholarships
Endowment scholarships are awarded to students on the basis of merit and/or need. The School of Medicine has a separate application process for scholarship determinations.
Endowment Loans
The KU Endowment Association makes loans up to $5,000 annually to medical students. The interest rate for an Endowment Loan is a fixed 5 percent, and interest accrues from the time the loans are issued.
Primary Care Loan Program
This program, sponsored by the federal government, offers loans to students who have exceptional financial need and are interested in primary care. Medical students may qualify to receive a Primary Care Loan if they agree to enter and complete a residency training program in primary health care (family practice, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or preventive medicine) no later than four years after graduation. Furthermore, the student must agree to practice primary health care until the loan is repaid in full at 5 percent interest.

Housing
There are many privately owned apartment complexes, duplexes, and homes near KU Medical Center in Kansas City. Information on housing is available online at

Kirmayer Fitness Center
The center promotes physical fitness and wellness for faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the KU Medical Center and their spouses. Most full-time students automatically become members upon enrollment in classes and payment of fees.
Student Wellness Program
The KUMC Student Wellness Program encourages students to develop and maintain a balanced approach to life. The initiative is promoted through programs and events on campus that cover the cultural, emotional, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual dimensions of wellness. For more information, visit

Academic Performance Enhancement and Educational Support
Student Counseling and Educational Support Services provides services to enhance academic success and help students achieve their goals. Services on the Kansas City campus are free and strictly confidential. Students often access these services to improve study and test-taking skills, time-management and organizational skills, note taking, memorizing, textbook reading, stress management and test anxiety, and licensing board examination preparation skills. Personal Counseling
Counseling is available for students on the KUMC Kansas City campus. Licensed psychologists provide free and confidential services, including individual, group, family, and couples' therapy. A psychiatrist is available for consultation and medication evaluations. Students often attend counseling to address concerns such as adjusting to an academic program, stress management, relationship difficulty, and anxiety or depression. There are no fees for counseling or psychiatric services, and all sessions are strictly confidential. For further information or to schedule an appointment, call (913) 588-6580. In case of crisis after normal business hours, call (913) 917-6283. Crises that occur during normal business hours should be referred to G116 Student Center Building or (913) 588-6580.
Transcripts
A transcript documents a student’s official academic record. Transcripts can be ordered in the student records section of the Office of the Registrar. All KU course work (undergraduate, graduate, medical school, etc.) is on one transcript.
Requirements for Obtaining a Transcript:
- There must not be a hold on the student’s record.
- The student must personally make the request in writing. The request may be mailed to or made in person at the Office of the Registrar, 3013 Student Center Building, on the Medical Center campus. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on Kansas holidays. The mailing address is Office of the Registrar, 3001 Student Center Building, Mail Stop 4029, KU Medical Center, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160.
Veterans
The Office of the Registrar provides certification services for eligible veterans and their dependents.
Visiting Medical Students
Visiting students in good standing from LCME-accredited medical schools, or from schools of osteopathic medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, may enroll at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, Kansas. During elective clerkships, visiting students must pay tuition and other enrollment fees, must show evidence of coverage by malpractice and health insurance, and must present the Immunization Requirements for Visiting Medical Students form.
Visiting medical students must submit proof of $500,000 malpractice coverage, either by a copy of the insurance policy in force or by certification of the dean, when they submit the official application for admission.
Applications are available in the Office of the Registrar. After completion, they should be sent back to the Office of the Registrar, 3001 Student Center, Mail Stop 4029, KU Medical Center, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160. The application should indicate the academic department in which the student wishes to study. Admission depends on the adequacy of the student’s credentials and available space. Visiting medical students are scheduled only after KU medical students are scheduled.
Students may seek clerkships in elective courses listed in the University of Kansas School of Medicine Catalog for four weeks or a maximum of eight weeks. Prerequisites are listed in the catalog.
Periods of instruction are set up in 12 four-week modules per year, corresponding closely to the calendar months. Visiting students are expected to conform to these pre-set dates.
